‘Yoga-SING-Yoga’ classes are for anyone who enjoys singing and would like to increase their vocal competence. Both singing and yoga require a focused and controlled use of the breath, and yoga can benefit students in the following ways:
- Specifically chosen yoga asana place an emphasis on opening the chest and develop- ing strength and flexibility in the muscles involved in efficient breathing.
- An enhanced awareness of how the breathing muscles work
- The intentional and mindful slowing of the breath during asana activates the body’s relaxation response and provides students with tools that they can use to offset ner- vousness and anxiety before and during performances.
- Freeing the body of unnecessary muscle tension helps to free the voice, improving resonance and tone quality
-Chanting in unison or spontaneous harmonization brings a wonderful feeling of com- munity and oneness that not all singers get to experience
Each class is 1.5 hours long and is structured in two 3⁄4 hour segments, as follows:
1. Breathing Awareness Practice: bringing a state of focus and calm to the mind and body
2. Warm-Up: limbering up the body and getting the breath flowing while moving 3. Poses: yoga poses that help to strengthen the breathing muscles as well as the whole body, aiding in flexibility and relaxation;
2. Vocal technique exercises: Learning songs and
chants, providing practice with vocal & breathing
techniques. Opportunities to learn to sing in
harmony
A high level of fitness is not necessary, as cues are given to adjust poses and support a practice that suits each individual.
